Laser Skin Resurfacing
Also known as “laser peel,” laser skin resurfacing usually takes less than 1½ hours (sometimes just a few minutes) depending on the size of the area being treated. The laser peel procedure uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser beam which vaporizes the upper layers of damaged skin at controlled levels of penetration. The laser procedure removes areas of damaged or wrinkled skin often caused by prolonged sun exposure. Laser skin resurfacing can minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth and the eyes and is also effective in treating facial scars and skin areas with uneven pigmentation.
Laser and light treatments, or specially formulated chemical peels, resurface the skin to treat pigmentation disorders, such as sun and age spots.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion removes a layer of surface skin to improve the appearance of facial scarring due to acne, chicken pox, injury or other causes, as well as uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage, tattoos, age spots and certain kinds of skin lesions. During the dermabrasion procedure, the skin is frozen, typically with a spray, and then abraded with a high-speed rotary instrument for a dramatically smoother, fresher look. After your dermabrasion, it is normal to feel a sensation similar to sunburn for a week or so, at which time most patients are able to return to work. The newly revealed skin will likely appear pinker than usual for two to three months. Patients should be sure to adequately protect skin from sunlight.
Tattoo Removal
If the tattoo is relatively small and/or easily accessible and cosmetically in an inconspicuous area, the entire tattoo can be surgically cut out (or excised), and the skin can be sutured closed with stitches. This can be done in a single tattoo removal treatment session, or in several tattoo removal treatment sessions involving a “staged” or serial excision technique. This surgical technique is done in the office under local anesthesia.
